Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome (Hypogonadism)

Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome, or Hypogonadism, is a condition in which a man’s body does not produce sufficient testosterone, the primary male hormone. This condition generally affects older men, but younger patients can also be affected by a variety of reasons. Testosterone deficiency syndrome, or hypogonadism, can affect not only your sexual performance, but also your bone health, energy level, muscle strength, and mood. While the term “andropause” is sometimes used for this condition, it is inaccurate. Unlike menopause, testosterone deficiency syndrome is not an inevitable result of aging. Testosterone plays a key role in a man’s sex drive, muscle mass, as well as mental and physical energy.
If you are having difficulty achieving or maintaining erections, your doctor may also order a simple morning blood test to rule out low testosterone as the underlying cause. Testosterone replacement therapy—such as with a gel—can help alleviate symptoms. Regular follow-up, though, is needed to ensure that you reach a reasonable range of testosterone, not an “NFL kind of level,” says Dr. Saransh
Not all men with low testosterone, however, experience symptoms. In that case, it’s best to leave things alone.
